A spokesman for the Judiciary of Hong Kong said Thursday the city's Coroner has issued eight respective "Order to perform an Autopsy" for the bodies of the eight victims in the hostage incident, given the need for an investigation into the death by Hong Kong police.

"The Coroner has decided that an investigation into the death by the Police should be carried out, taking into account all relevant considerations in accordance with the law," said the spokesman.

Upon receipt of the police investigation report, the Coroner would then decide whether an inquest into the death should be held, he said.

The Judiciary of Hong Kong is responsible for the administration of justice in Hong Kong, and the Coroner's Court is among the courts of law in the city.

The Coroner's Court is responsible to inquire into the causes and circumstances of certain deaths. The Coroner is a judicial officer who has the power to grant autopsy orders, order police investigations of death, order inquests to be held, and among others.

The eight bodies of the Hong Kong victims in the hostage incident in the Philippine capital Manila were brought back to Hong Kong on Wednesday evening by a government-organized chartered plane, which also carried most of the survivors and victims' relatives.

An ex-policeman turned Philippine gunman hijacked a tour bus carrying 21 Hong Kong tourists Monday morning in Manila. The incident ended with eight tourists dead and seven injured. The hostage taker was killed in police assault.
