Education and jobs limited

According to an estimate by China- Dolls, only 35 percent of ten patients received an education beyond primary school level and because they can't perform manual work, the jobs they can do are very limited.

"Currently, we focus on offering free medication to ten patients and will move to help them get education and employment opportunities," said Wang.

Pang Hongsen, a 20-year-old man and his 4-year-old sister, are both ten patients in Heze, Shandong Province and among those helped by the association.

Pang, whose father was a migrant worker and mother a housewife, had been living a constant nightmare in which he experienced countless broken bones and had to drop out of school at 13.

With an annual income of about 10,000 yuan, Pang's family could not afford the costly treatments and Pang's mother even thought of begging on the street to raise money to treat her two children until they met Wang.

Pang received about 7,000 yuan from China-Dolls last year for surgery that cost 12,000 yuan.

"All I want is for my condition to improve as soon as possible so that I can find a job and help treat my sister," Pang said.

However, without proper education, Pang has little chance of finding a decent job in Beijing.

Education - and childcare when they are working in the underpass - is also a problem for Zhang and Cui's daughter. Previously they took her with them to the underpass, but it became problematic and recently they sent her to Xi'an to be with Zhang's mother.

Cui said she had made numerous calls to kindergartens in Beijing and even offered to pay an increased tuition fee but none are willing to accept the girl after learning of her condition.

"Her grandmother called and said she couldn't care for her properly," said Cui. "So we are going to Xi'an to bring her back and will watch her in the underpass. We make more money when she is there, but we don't want to use her as a money machine."
