China's transport development in the '11th Five-Year Plan' period and the prospective development in the '12th Five-Year Plan' period

1.2 Rapid growth of transport capacity, remarkable improvement of transport efficiency and services

In terms of highway transport, the freight traffic volume, freight traffic turnover volume, passenger traffic volume and passenger traffic turnover volume have reached 24.3 billion tons, 4.3005 trillion ton-kilometers, 30.6 billion and 1.4914 trillion person-kilometers respectively over the last five years, increasing 14%, 15.6%, 10.2% and 10.4% respectively over the tenth five-year plan period.

In terms of waterway transport, the freight traffic volume, freight traffic turnover volume, passenger traffic volume and passenger traffic turnover have totaled 3.64 billion tons, 6.4305 trillion ton-kilometers, 220 million and 7.15 billion person-kilometers respectively over the last five years, increasing 14% and 11.7% respectively of the first two, decreasing 0.7% of the third and increaing 3.1% of the last over the tenth five-year plan period.

The total cargo throughput and container throughput of major ports have reached 8.02 billion tons and 145 million TEUs respectively, increasing 15% and 18.8% respectively over the tenth five-year plan period.

The total passenger traffic volume by urban public transport has reached 87 billion, increasing 12% over the tenth five-year plan period.

The rural passenger road transport lines have reached 85,000, and regular road traffic lines have become operational in 98% of rural towns and 88% of administrative villages.

With respect to civil aviation, the overall traffic turnover volume, passenger traffic volume and freight traffic volume have reached 53.36 billion ton-kilometers, 270 million and 5.564 million tons respectively over the last five years, increasing 24.9%, 15.4% and 24.9% respectively over the tenth five-year plan period.

With respect to postal services, the overall business volume has reached RMB 197.5 billion, increasing 21% over the tenth five-year plan period. More than 10 million pieces of express mails have been delivered on an average daily basis.

The modern transport system is developing rapidly which makes transport more convenient, flexible and diverse so as to meet the increasing demand for a customer-oriented freight and passenger transport with wider coverage and higher quality.
