Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has praised a college graduate-turned village official for her outstanding work, urging her peers to learn from her example and work hard at grassroots positions.

Zhang Guangxiu graduated from university in July 2009 and began to act as a village official in the Lushang Village of Yantai City in east China's Shandong Province. She had been working hard to help villagers out of poverty even after she was diagnosed with leukaemia in September 2010.

In an instruction issued on Feb. 14 this year, Xi said Zhang's deeds were touching and efforts should be made to publicize her example among college graduates-turned village officials, according to an official statement Xinhua got on Thursday.

Xi also asked authorities to arrange for professional medical treatment for Zhang's disease.
