A university in North China's Tianjin municipality has dismissed a professor who was accused of committing sex crime in the United States several years ago, university officials said Wednesday.

Yao Qingwei, a 46-year-old chemistry professor at Tianjin University, was arrested in 2006 in Kankakee county, Illinois for trying to solicit a minor for sex on the Internet. The incident occurred while he was working at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois, said Song Xuefeng, vice-director of the publicity department of Tianjin University.

Yao was arrested after agreeing to meet with police posing as underage girls. He was charged with six counts of indecent solicitation of a child, according to an American Broadcasting Company (ABC) news report. Northern Illinois University later dismissed him.

Yao was hired in 2009 by Tianjin University in an overseas recruitment drive funded by subsidies from the Tianjin local government.

Tianjin University became aware of the incident after a netizen posted the information online in March. Authorities at Tianjin University investigated the case and decided to dismiss Yao after they confirmed the incident.
