Villagers said that Wu paid the Xiangshui County Hospital 800 yuan ($130) to deal with the girl's body.

Yangtze Evening News quoted an official with the hospital who denied that it was involved in disposing of the girl's body.

Police said the other three infants were buried by social workers employed by their relatives after they died of illnesses at medical institutions.

Shi Kuanyi, head of Yancheng public security bureau's criminal division, said on Wednesday that it is a custom for local residents to bury children who died at a very young age without cremating them or granting them a decent burial service. But the bodies had been handled in an improper way, causing speculation, he added.

Police are still probing the incident.
