One person died and 10 others remained missing after a boat capsized in the central province of Hunan on Thursday, local authorities confirmed.

The sand-carrying boat capsized at around 4 a.m. in high winds in a tributary of the Dongting Lake, China's second largest freshwater lake, the maritime bureau in Hunan said in a press release.

Of the 17 people on the boat, only six had been rescued, the document said, adding that rescue work has continued Thursday night.

The 1,500-tonne boat was from the neighboring province of Hubei, it said.

The local governments in Hubei's Jingzhou city and Jianli county, where the boat was registered, had also sent rescuers.

Sources in Hubei said on board the vessel were boatmen and their family members.
