China has launched a campaign to regulate slaughterhouses in an effort to ensure the quality of meat products, the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) said Friday.
The campaign was introduced in a notice released by nine ministries, including the MOC, the Ministry of Agriculture and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, the MOC said in a statement on its website
The seven-month campaign will be conducted among designated slaughterhouses, correcting illegal activity and decertifying substandard slaughterhouses, the statement said.
China currently has 18,150 designated pig-slaughtering companies. Authorities have decertified 3,497 companies and required 3,748 others to correct wrongdoings since the 2008 revision of slaughtering regulations, the statement said.
