Of the 103 residents of Dongtang township of Renhua county who have had their blood tested, 64 children have been diagnosed with elevated blood lead levels, according to the Shaoguan city government, which administers Renhua county.

An initial report on the poisoning surfaced around the middle of February, when several of the township's residents were found to have excessive levels of lead in their blood.

Some of the residents suspect that the excess lead levels are connected with a large smelting plant located nearby.

Local authorities said they have organized medical treatment for the sickened children and are monitoring emissions coming from local businesses to find a possible source of contamination.
