Staff members from the Shangqiu Bus Transportation Company in central China's Henan Province show bundles of one-yuan notes that they receive as their salaries.

Staff at a bus company in Shangqiu in central China's Henan Province have been receiving one-yuan coins and notes as their monthly salaries for more than a decade.

Zhang Weifeng, executive deputy general manager at the Shangqiu Public Transport Company, said although local banks were unwilling to accept such large amounts of one-yuan notes, many people still liked receiving the small-denomination notes and coins to use on public transportation. This is why the company has paid its employees in one-yuan coins and notes during the last 12 years.

Wei Xiuxiu, a bus company employee, said she had always received her salary in small-denomination notes and coins but found it difficult to use when shopping in supermarkets.

Zhang hopes that more people will use transportation IC card on buses and that banks will be more willing to accept the coins and notes.
