A report released Tuesday by the Social Sciences Academic Press (China) urged the Chinese government to intensify supervision over the country's small food processing enterprises.

Inadequate supervision over the food processing link, which possesses great potential safety hazards, is a major reason this sector could become a hot spot for food safety accidents, according to the report.

The report urges the government to launch special campaigns to shut down unlicensed food enterprises and regulate those with unqualified, unsanitary food processing environments.

The government should mete out harsh punishments to illegal food processors and increase surprise inspections for those found posing potential safety hazards, said the report.

A blacklist should be established to document illegal food processors, and their names should be released to the public in a timely manner via the media, it said.
