Over 1,300 die from infectious diseases in March

More than 573,303 cases of infectious diseases were reported in China in March, and resulted in 1,358 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

Most of the deaths, 1,334 cases, were caused by Category B notifiable diseases, and the five most frequently reported diseases last month included hepatitis, tuberculosis, syphilis, dysentery and gonorrhea, according to a statement published on the ministry's website on Thursday.

No cases of SARS, human-communicable bird flu, polio or diphtheria were reported in the month, nor were any cases of plague and cholera -- Category A infectious diseases, according to the statement.

Category C infectious diseases left 24 people dead in March, and the three most frequently reported diseases were foot-and-mouth disease, other infectious diarrhea diseases and mumps, according to the statement.
