China's police chief Meng Jianzhu on Thursday called for intensified efforts to fight and prevent drug crimes.

Meng made the remarks during a meeting with representatives of the country's outstanding anti-drug police officers and the family members of the officers who died in anti-drug operations.

China set up a special 1,000-strong anti-drug team in 1982 in the southwestern province of Yunnan where narcotics-related crimes were most grave.

Meng appreciated the achievements of the team members and said the members should be taken as examples of the police forces nationwide.

He also noted that the situation of relevant crimes is still serious in China and called on the anti-drug polices to exert further efforts to maintain social stability and harmony.
