A young Foxconn employee fell to his death from an 18th-floor apartment Wednesday afternoon in southwest China's Sichuan province, the public security bureau of Chengdu said Thursday.

The 23-year-old worker, surnamed Xie, fell from the apartment at 4:40 p.m. He was sent to hospital for treatment, but later died in hospital, the public security bureau wrote on its official microblog on Sina Weibo, the country's most popular microblogging site.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

Foxconn, the world's largest maker of computer components, assembles products for Apple, Sony and Nokia. It was brought into the spotlight after a string of workers committed suicide at its massive Chinese mainland plants -- acts that some have blamed on tough working conditions.

The company currently employs 1.2 million people, including about 1 million based on the Chinese mainland.
