A Unversity in central China's Wuhan City canceled long-distance running in the autumn campus sports competition held this past weekend since few students were in shape good enough to sign up.

The Huazhong University of Science and Technology did not hold the 5-kilometer long-distance running for men and the 3-kilometer one for women in the annual sports fair.

The university officials told Wuhan Morning Post that most students are obsessed with digital devices and take little time to exercise. Most couldn't run for such a long distance without risking overexertion.

Some students told the newspaper that long-distance running is outdated and they prefer some interesting group ball games.

The university's sports department said the fitness of new students drops every year. Shen Yuejin, deputy director of the department, said they might resume the race if students' health improves.
