The Lanzhou, Yulin and Hengshui warships of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Navy departed from Sanya in Hainan province on Tuesday along with the warship Jinggangshan.

Simulated air and submarine attacks were staged as part of the drill.

"Air defense and anti-submarine defenses are two challenges for warships. Running the drills is a test for both fleet command and emergency management," said Chen Yueqi, a navy commander.

The drills are in line with the navy's annual training plan. The PLA Navy conducted seven high-sea training exercises in 2012.

Open sea training tests soldiers' ability to operate modern information equipment and adapt to complicated meteorological and hydrological environments, said Zhang Hanchuan, a training officer.
