The starting fare for taxis in Beijing may increase from 10 yuan (1.6 US dollars) to 13 yuan(2.1 US dollars). Moreover, the Taxi Call fare and fares set during rush hour will also rise, according a chinanews.com report.

Beijing's taxi fare is currently 10 yuan for journeys within 3 kilometers and 2 yuan for every additional kilometer. The price has not been changed in 7 years. [File photo]

This move will allow drivers to keep the profits made from the increase and receive, on average, 6000 - 6800 yuan (974.4 - 1104.3 US dollars ) a month, the equivalent of the average monthly income in China.

"It is only through reasonable adjustment of the taxi fare and taxi drivers' salaries that we can thoroughly deal with the difficulty of taking a taxi." said Wang Limei, secretary-general of the China Road Transport Association.

Li Hong, director of the Charge Management Department in the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform says that raising prices will cover the high taxi operating costs and make it easier to hail a taxi in Beijing.

The hearing for Beijing's taxi fare adjustment is scheduled to be held on Tuesday afternoon by the Beijing Municipal Commission of Development and Reform.
