Young women breastfeed their babies in downtown Changsha, Hunan Province, on May 19, 2013. |
Each of the women wore a nametag on her sleeve, reading the likes of "Big Tree's Mum" or "Abu's Mum." Their husbands, meanwhile, were busy taking pictures of the scene. The astonishing display immediately attracted crowds of onlookers.
"May 20 marks National Breastfeeding Day," said Li Changyu, one of the young mothers. "Young mothers from 40 cities nationwide agreed to undertake a ‘flash mob' activity in their own cities to promote breastfeeding and call for more nursing rooms to be provided by public places such as work units and bazaars," she said.
Many young mothers have already recognized the benefits of breastfeeding and follow the suggestions of health experts, said Li, also the organizer of the "flash mob." "That's why I stick to breastfeeding my baby, who is about to turn one," she added.
Li said that most of the young mothers came from working couples, and their babies ranged from four-month-old infants to two-year-olds.
This "flash mob" in Changsha lasted some ten minutes and the young mothers left soon after.
According an article published on Cnr.com.cn on May 20, the state's provisions pointed out that the breast-feeding ratio for babies aged from 0 to six months old should reach 50 percent in China, but this figure currently stands at less than 30 percent. In addition, so-called breastfeeding centers have already gained much popularity abroad, while these are still under development in China.
