A mother accidentally crushed her 5-year-old daughter to death while she was backing her car in an underground parking garage in south China’s Guangxi on Monday, a local news portal reported.

The accident happened around 7am Monday as the woman, a licensed driver, intended to back her car into a parking space as they arrived at the garage of a residential building in Qinzhou city, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

She did not notice her daughter had already gotten out of the car and was waiting at the back, the report said.

Since the parking space was narrow, the woman drove back and forth several times to fit the space. The car’s navigation radar did not sound an alarm until it was too late, police said.

The mother picked up her daughter and drove her to hospital, but the girl was pronounced dead three hours later despite attempts to revive her.

Police reminded drivers to pay attention while parking and not to rely on navigation radar or cameras.

In June, a couple died in a parking garage in Zhejiang Province after the woman attempted to back the vehicle into a parking space and crushed her husband. The woman also died at the scene after smashing her head against a wall while leaning out of the driver’s seat.
