A woman fell into a deserted well and stayed alive, only eating three pieces of corn and rainwater for 15 days.

The woman, Su Qixiu, 38, is from Henan Province in central China. She fell into the well, after going out to collect herbs for medicine on the afternoon of Sept. 1. Her family was unable to find her for 15 days.

When Su was rescued from the well on the afternoon of September 16, she had been reduced to skin and bones, and her face was extremely thin.

The well is one meter in diameter and four meters in depth, surrounded by a corn field. The walls of the well were too slippery for climb. A farmer found her when he was picking corn in the field and called the police.

When the rescue team arrived, the woman was lying on the ground of the well with her eyes open, but she was too weak to speak. Chen Kui, an experienced rescuer, climbed down into the well. He heard the woman murmuring very weakly "Hungry. I am hungry…" After she was pulled out of the well, she was rushed to hospital.

A villager said, "It was a miracle. She had nothing to eat, but she stayed alive for so many days." The woman is now recovering. As she recalled, she took 5 pieces of uncooked corns with her the day when she dropped in the well. To keep alive, she ate three of them and drank rainwater.
