China's first cold-resistant subway, Harbin Subway Line 1, opens on September 26, 2013 in Harbin, the provincial capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. [Xinhua]

Harbin, the provincial capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, opened China's first cold-resistant subway, the Harbin Subway Line 1 on Thursday.

 

The Harbin Subway Line 1, with a length of 17.47 kilometers and a total of 18 subway stations, starts from Harbin South Railway Station and terminates at Harbin East Railway Station. Construction lasted for 5 years.

With a capacity of 1,470 passengers and a service life of 30 years, each train on the Harbin Subway line 1 can reach a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

The trains, which are snow-proof and cold-resistant, can be safely and steadily operated in extreme temperatures of -38 degrees Celsius.
