Three new human cases of H7N9 bird flu were confirmed in east Zhejiang Province at the weekend, health authorities said yesterday.

They were a 75-year-old woman surnamed Li from Zhuji, a 78-year-old man surnamed Zong from Yiwu and a 34-year-old man surnamed Meng from Ningbo. Li has since died and the two others are in a critical condition.

The cases bring Zhejiang's total this year to seven.

Meanwhile, authorities in southwest Guizhou Province said yesterday that a man suspected of H7N9 bird flu had died. The 38-year-old had been working in Zhejiang's Ruian.

And two new cases were reported in Foshan City in southern Guangdong Province. A 28-year-old woman surnamed Pu, a poultry seller, is in a stable condition while a 46-year-old driver surnamed Ou is critical. He raised poultry at home. Both lived in Foshan's Nanhai District. All poultry markets in the district have been closed.

Guangdong has confirmed 16 human H7N9 cases since August last year, with one death last week.
