Images of supposed copies of Fan's eight ID cards were posted on the Tianya website, one of China's most renowned online discussion forums, on April 15. The post also alleged that Fan has funneled a huge amount of ill-gotten monetary gains through the alleged forged identities.

The Beijing News reported that the images of Fan's supposed eight IDs posted online shows that four ID numbers are shared among the eight ID cards, which are all connected to the name "Fan Hongwei." However, the Chinese characters used to spell the name on each ID card differ.

Likewise, the newspaper reported that the name connected to one of the eight IDs was changed five times.

The Security Bureau of Shanxi province, the department with jurisdiction over Changzhi, is part of the investigation into the matter.
