The police chief in northern China's Tianjin City is under investigation for suspected discipline and law violations, the Party's disciplinary watchdog said yesterday .

Wu Changshun, director of the Tianjin Public Security Bureau, has worked for the bureau for 44 years, replacing Song Pingshun — who committed suicide in 2007 — in the top job.

In 2011, Wu also became the vice chairman of the Tianjin Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the city's advisory body.

According to reports, Wu was the "right-hand man" of Song, who was posthumously expelled from the Party for "moral decay."

Song was also secretary of the Tianjin Party's Political Science and Law Commission for 13 years. He was the top political adviser in Tianjin when he was found dead at his office in June 2007.

China's disciplinary watchdog posthumously stripped Song of Party membership, saying he had abused his power to seek benefits for his mistress.

Wu was reportedly questioned after Song's death.
