The suspect surnamed Liu, 30, drove a sports utility vehicle into a crowd of people around 10 a.m. near Jindian Park in the provincial capital of Kunming, said a police officer with the city public security bureau.

Two of the injured are in serious condition.

Police caught the suspect at the scene after bus drivers and nearby people helped stop the vehicle.

Initial investigation showed that Liu had a medical record of mental illness. He told the police he carried out the attack to seek revenge on society after a long period of failed treatment of his illness.

Further investigation is under way.
