The accident occurred at around 5 a.m. in Xiejiaji District of Huainan City, according to the city government.

The coal mine has an annual capacity of 90,000 tonnes, according to the provincial coal mine safety supervision bureau.

The coal mine failed to comply with local government's requirements in June and July to suspend production during the flood season.

Rescue work is under way.
