A Taiwan defense official said a military officer was punished for publicly advocating "Taiwan Independence" online, China News Service reported Thursday.

The news agency quoted a report from Central News Agency saying that Yen Ming, Taiwan's defense department minister, said Lieutenant Tsai Yao-Sheng was being punished for anti-Kuomintang Taiwan Independence remarks he made on Facebook that violate administrative neutrality.

Yen Ming said that according to army rules, remarks made on the Internet by a soldier in active service should not violate the administrative neutrality rule.

Lin Yu-Fang, a Kuomintang legislator, said that an army officer is not considered one of the common people. A soldier should have loyalty to the country, and anyone advocating "Taiwan Independence" should be discharged from the army.

Taiwan's Legislative Yuan held a hearing yesterday to review administrative and budget reports from Taiwan's defense department.
