Police caught Zhang Yangxi in Guixi City's Banqiao Village around 5:40pm yesterday after receiving a tip-off.
Zhang allegedly attacked the three children as they walked home from school in neighboring Shangrao City's Luojia Village on Friday morning.
An 8-year-old boy died at the scene and another child died in hospital. The other child, a 6-year-old boy, has recovered from a coma, but remains in intensive care at the Shangrao People's Hospital.
Police had offered 50,000 yuan (US$8,180) for information leading to the suspect's arrest.
Zhang, who has been imprisoned twice, was released from prison in April. He lives with his mother and barely talks to fellow villagers, said Huang Guangming, a Luojia Village official.
