A Chinese elementary school teacher who let a student hold a parasol for her on a school outing apologized for her behavior and expressed regret for what she did after photos of the incident drew overwhelming criticism on Chinese social media.
"I feel really bad about these photos. My behavior that day didn't live up to what a teacher should be," she said. In an interview on Monday evening, the teacher in question burst into tears when recalling the incident.
"I didn't expect my image to come out looking like this. My behavior was indeed improper. I keep a good relationship with my students. And that day we were on a school outing, therefore, I was relaxed and didn't think much of it. As a teacher, I should have set an example, but I didn't. Now I know I'm so wrong."
There has as yet been no report that either the boy who carried the parasol or any member of his family has filed a complaint about the matter. Despite local reports that the boy carried the parasol willingly, some of the Chinese public responded with torrents of sarcasm about the boy's behavior.
"We have to be critical. How can children become so snobbish at such a young age?" one internet user with the username Da Sheng Xi Nu commented on China's Twitter-like social media service Sina Weibo.
The teacher said she hoped the public would stop making judgments about the child in question.
"I admit that I didn't do the right thing. I will accept whatever punishment [is due]," she said. "However, some comments are attacking the children. I hope you will do me a favor and not judge them. They are so young. I'm really worried about them. They are simple and innocent. They don't understand the world."
