An illegal basement covering 700 square meters and with a 10-meter depth was recently discovered in Beijing, Chinanews.com reported on Nov. 26, 2015.

The basement was found in a small Hutong, or an alley way, with a width no more than 3 meters. The owner of the basement, surnamed Li, bought a yard in this narrow place and spent five years building his basement.

Local administration and law enforcement said Mr. Li had been ordered to get the basement backfilled, an endeavor that could cost him up to a million yuan. Li will also pay a fine for the illegal project.
