The central government opened a meeting on Friday morning to discuss how it can lift 70 million people out of poverty by the end of 2020.

China plans to help all its remaining poor escape poverty in the next five years, a challenge identified by President Xi Jinping as the toughest if the government is to achieve its aim of building a "moderately prosperous society" in this time frame.

More than 600 million Chinese have escaped poverty in the past three decades, about 70 percent of the total global achievement, and the urgent need of those remaining in poverty has been repeatedly highlighted by China's leaders.

Initiatives tailored to different areas of the country, rather than the previous one-size-fits-all approach, are the order of the day for this latest phase of poverty relief, according to a statement issued after a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on Monday.
