The disappearance of a senior named Pei, from Huangshi, Hubei Province, has eventually turned into a tragedy when his skeleton was found recently in his bathroom.

Pei, who had never married and had little contact with his neighbors is presumed to have died about six years without anyone’s knowledge.

Several years ago, Pei’s nephew, local police and officials of the community and retirement affairs offices unlocked the door of Pei’s home in order to search for the missing man. However, for some reason they neglected a thorough search of the toilet where Pei lay dead.

At midday of Nov. 24, 2015, Pei’s brother and nephew revisited the home at the call of the old man’s lifetime employer, a steel factory, which wanted to regain control of the property from Pei. It was only while collecting Pei’s belongings that they found his bones behind the washing machine.

Pei presumably died in late Feb., 2009, verified by his untouched calendar with its date remaining on Feb. 27, and his travelogues that he had kept as a hobby every time he set out to tourist destinations stopped updates after 2008.

The local police helped Pei’s relatives to cremate his remains.

An anonymous official from the local civil administration said there are often cases of old people dying in their homes, but it was rare for a death to remain undetected over such a long period.

A recent executive meeting of the State Council has proposed new policies and requirements on the elderly nursing services as the development of the graying society tests the filial piety and community service ethic of the country.

According to Shen Gerong, the Party secretary of the community where Pei lived, there are individual healthcare services and call facilities designed particularly for the elderly. Besides, the younger generations are encouraged to visit their parents more often so that the old people may not suffer from loneliness.
