Heavy rain has continued to batter parts of China with reports of severe flooding and geological disasters.

About 480 counties across mainly southern parts of China have been subjected to the floods, with a total of nearly 7.5 million people affected.

Official figures show that 74 people have been killed in recent flooding, with 12 others missing and over 300 thousand becoming homeless.

Landslides and mudslides have also been triggered by the excessive rainfall, claiming dozens of lives.

There are warnings of major flooding along the Yangtze, Songhuajiang, Huaihe and Pearl Rivers, while over 100 rivers in central, east and south China have also surpassed dangerous water levels.

Meteorologists say the rain and resulting floods are linked to the strong El Nino weather phenomenon, which is expected to come to an end in the next few weeks.

The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has also predicted that drought may continue to affect areas mainly in north China, where little rainfall has been seen within the past couple of months.

The drought has affected 620 thousand people and over 1 million livestock.
