Central China's Henan Province is to allow single children to take 20 days leave each year to care for their sick parents.

A regulation approved on Friday allows an only child to take 20 days off if their parent is over 60 and in hospital. Henan is the first province with such a scheme.

After more than 30 years of China's one-child policy, care for the elderly has become a serious challenge to both families and the government. In 2015, there were 220 million people aged at 60 or older, 16 percent of the population.
