An airliner owned by China Southern Airlines was struck by powerful lightning Monday afternoon in Jieyang City, Guangdong Province in south China.

A Boeing 737-800 airliner owned by China Southern Airlines is hit by powerful lightning at Chaoshan Airport, Jieyang City, Guangdong Province on May 30.

The accident took place around 15:04 a.m. on May 30 at Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport. The B737-800 airliner was parked on the apron after regular maintenance. The whole process was caught on camera.

There was a wild thunderstorm in the city that afternoon.

No passengers or crew members were on board when the accident took place, the airline company said. Preliminary checks found marks on the plane's tire, which were possibly left by the lightning.

The tire has been replaced, and a thorough examination of the plane is underway.
