A landslide-triggered barrier lake has formed in central China's Hunan Province, threatening the safety of a downstream reservoir and forcing 77 residents to evacuate.

According to the provincial flood control office, the lake is located about 850 meters upstream from a small reservoir in Qiaotou Village, Zhangjiajie City. It began to take shape following a massive landslide on Wednesday caused by rainstorms.

The lake is 100 meters long, 10 meters wide and 5 meters deep with about 3,000 cubic meters of water.

Rescuers are taking emergency measures to lower the water level of the reservoir before strong rainfall predicted for the area hits.
