The National Health and Family Planning Commission of China and China Family Planning Association co-hosted an activity - themed "knowledge, sex, wisdom and action - love with condom" - on the annual World Contraception Day in Beijing on Sept 26.

The association issued a survey report on Chinese college students' sex and reproduction health, calling for the government, families and society to pay attention to young people's sex and reproduction issues.

Ma Xiaowei, vice-minister of the commission, Gou Qingming, vice-chairman of the association, Soyoltuya Bayaraa vice-representative of UNFPA in Jinhua, Qin Geng, vice-director of the women and children department of the commission, and Geng Yutian, vice director of Beijing public health and family planning commission, attended the activity with about 260 other participants.

The activity calls for more attention regarding young people's reproductive health issues, more awareness of safe contraception techniques, and a reduction in unwanted pregnancies.

Ma Xiaowei said the Chinese government attaches great importance to reproductive health and makes it part of the national development strategy. He pledged to improve the public health services in this field and to provide contraception technology and contraception tools and medicines for free by the end of 2020.

"The commission and association are exploring how to improve reproductive services for the young through various channels," Ma said. "World Contraception Day is an opportunity to publicize relevant knowledge and raise the awareness."

Ma stressed that the society should strengthen the young and juvenile's sense as the first responsible person and that different parties - including the government, social organization, international organization - should form a synergy in this work.

After that the representative of young people read a letter of appeal, advocating that the young people should be responsible for their own health and become conscious caretakers of their own sexual and reproductive health.
