Two Chinese subtitle translators for Japanese anime programs have been detained for copyright infringement in Tokyo, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reported.

One is 30 years old and works for a Japanese company. The other is a 20-year-old student.

Police said that from July to August the two suspects used software to add Chinese subtitles to "The Heroic Legend of Arslan", the anime adaptation of a Japanese fantasy novel series, and other animation works.

The subtitled version was updated so quickly that it appeared online just hours after TV stations broadcast the latest episode, according to police.

Adding subtitles without approval, even if well-intentioned, is forbidden in Japan as it violates the rights of copyright owners, said the report.

Subtitle teams in China translate a mix of media ranging from TV shows to movies. Many of them are volunteer who participate in online translation to improve their language skills or due to passionate interest in overseas content.
