74 killed after power plant collapse

Seventy-four people have been confirmed dead and another two injured as a platform of a power plant's cooling tower under construction collapsed in east China's Jiangxi Province Thursday, rescuers said.

The power plant which is located in Fengcheng City, central Jiangxi, was under construction. The collapse happened in the early morning around 7 a.m.

As of 10 p.m., 68 victims have been identified. Most of them were born after 1980, with the youngest being 23 years old, and the oldest 53.

The Fengcheng power plant is a key construction project in Jiangxi Province, with the cost reaching 7.67 billion yuan (US$1.1 billion). The project was planned to start production on Nov. 28, 2017.

After completion, the gross installed capacity of the entire power plant will reach 4.6 million kilowatts, making it the largest thermal power plant across the province.

Further investigations are underway.
