Over 20,000 passengers have been left stranded by delayed or canceled flights due to the worst fog to hit the southwestern city in years.

A red alert for flight delays was issued at midnight and as of Sunday afternoon it remained in place. The runway was closed for nearly 10 hours and was accessible for limited operation at 11:43 a.m..

According to Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport, 49 flights had been canceled as of Sunday noon, stranding over 20,000 passengers.

Another 32 flights were canceled Saturday, and 35 arrival flights were forced to land in other airports.

The airport said the heavy fog has disrupted the most flights and stranded the most passengers in years. Certain flights scheduled to fly tomorrow might also be affected.
