Beijing mulls extending elderly care policies and services to the entire Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei-region.
By the end of 2016, Beijing is home to 3.484 million senior citizens, who account for 16 percent of the city’s total population. There are 587 elderly care institutions in the city, with 509 of them in operation and 108,497 beds available. Every 100 senior citizens have access to 3.8 beds on average. In addition, 78 nursing homes with a total of 17,748 beds are currently under construction.
The city plans to increase land supply for building new elderly care institutions. It will also set up an elderly care industry fund with an initial amount of 1.6 billion yuan (about US$235.4 million).
Meanwhile, Beijing is developing an information platform to identify the locations of senior citizens and the distribution of elderly care services to better serve the older citizens.
