The Ministry of Environment Protection will ramp up inspections on air pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.
The Ministry of Environment Protection will implement new air pollution inspection measures in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The ministry has released details on the “Airborne Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region” and six complementary plans for improving air quality.
The new pollution control measures include plans in supervision, inspection, accountability and so on.
According to the plans, 28 cities in and around the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region are required to cut PM2.5 concentration as well as the number of days with severe air pollution by at least 15 percent from October 2017 to March 2018 to meet smog reduction targets. In addition, Beijing must meet even higher standards to cut PM2.5 concentration by 25 percent.
Liu Bingjiang, head of the ministry’s air quality department, said the decrease of PM2.5 concentration was limited and the number of days with severe air pollution has not changed much in the past four years. It is the first time the environmental authorities have made a detailed plan for the fall and winter seasons and set up goals for every city to improve air pollution.
Additionally, Liu Changgen, deputy director in charge of central inspection from the ministry, said the leading officials will be held accountable if cities fail to meet environmental protection targets.
