UN Women in China announced on Sept. 22 that they will collaborate for the second time with the Global Goodwill Ambassador, a non-profit organization for women entrepreneurship and empowerment, to promote gender equality through a fundraising gala in December.

Addressing gender equality during the press conference, Julia Broussard, the country program manager of the UN Women China Office, shared her concerns over the remaining gender gaps in China.

“China has made great progress in promoting gender equality. However gender gaps still exist. For example, women still do not have equal employment and income opportunities compared to men. Domestic violence exists and women are the main victims,” Broussard said.

Last year, the partnership between UN Women and the Global Goodwill Ambassador netted US$200,000 during the evening fundraising event hosted for the support of UN Women’s work in China.

“I hope all entrepreneurs, regardless of sex, will participate in the philanthropic endeavors to guarantee the equal rights of women,” said Yen Chou, the president of the Chinese American Parent-Student Council, a non-governmental organization with special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

“We expect more entrepreneurs to be inspired while cooperating with us. They should assume their responsibilities, make a distinct impact and be at the forefront of gender equality,” she added.

An Zhongyan, the director of Beijing Association of Women Entrepreneurs, revealed that the association has helped build a library with 200,000 books worth approximately 7 million yuan (US$1.06 million) in Shiyan, a prefecture-level city in Hubei Province. Shiyan was designated as a critical part of China’s South-to-North water diversion project to be lifted out of poverty. They also donated books to Tibetan children.

“I can still remember a female entrepreneur from the Global Goodwill Ambassador who urged people to live with love, because, as she said, love is an intuitive sense from the day we were born,” An said.
