Police in southern China's Guangdong Province and Hong Kong seized 71 suspects involved in a cross-border online gambling case Sunday.

Guangdong police captured 48 suspects in the city of Dongguan, and their Hong Kong counterparts seized 23 suspects in Hong Kong, the public security department of Guangdong announced Monday.

Guangdong police froze more than 21 million yuan (3.17 million U.S. dollars) in online bets, and Hong Kong police froze more than 100 million Hong Kong dollars (12.8 million U.S. dollars).

In April, Guangdong police received a report of a gambling ring based in Dongguan, which used websites to place illegal bets in Hong Kong's gambling industry.

Later, Guangdong and Hong Kong police jointly investigated and launched respective raids Sunday.
