First World Health Conference of Acupuncture and Moxibustion held in Quzhou

As Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion strives to contribute to global health and wellbeing, the 2017 First World Health Conference of Acupuncture and Moxibustion was convened in Quzhou, Zhejiang Province from Dec. 5 to 7. 


The three-day event comprised colorful events including a media tour on Dec. 5, a ceremony commemorating the saint of acupuncture and moxibustion and the opening ceremony of the conference on Dec. 6, and several other forums discussing various topics like the development of the industry. 


Sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO), the World Federation of Acupuncture-Moxibustion Societies (WAFS), China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and CCTV-7, and undertaken by the Quzhou Municipal Government, China Association of Acupuncture-Moxibustion (CAA), Institute of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences and Qujiang District Government, the event welcomed officials from WHO, Chinese national ministries, universities, research institutes, provincial and municipal governments, leaders from WAFS executive committee and secretariat as well as CAA and its secretariat, domestic and international experts and scholars from the acupuncture and moxibustion field, and representatives from Chinese Medicine companies in China and abroad. 


On Dec. 6, prior to the opening ceremony of the conference, a ceremony was held first to commemorate Yang Jizhou, Saint of Acupuncture and Moxibustion at the Yang Jizhou Square. Born in Sanqu, where today’s Qujiang locates, the famous acupuncturist of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) had travelled many provinces in China during his time to practice medicine and healed a vast number of patients. Nowadays, his masterpiece about acupuncture and moxibustion has been translated into 7 languages and spread across over 180 countries and regions. 


As the descendants of Saint of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, the Qujiang people has taken the responsibility of  carry forward the acupuncture and moxibustion culture, according to Wu Jiangping, Party secretary of the Qujiang District in his speech at the ensuing opening ceremony of the conference. Wang highlighted that the city was now striving to develop the cultural resources of the national intangible heritage acupuncture and moxibustion, and dedicating the whole district to build up a city of recreation led by the acupuncture and moxibustion. 


So far, the district has established Quzhou Acupuncture and Moxibustion Hospital, Yang Jizhou Acupuncture and Moxibustion Cultural Center, Yang Jizhou Cultural Park, and many expert workstations. In addition, the district has signed a series of cooperative agreements with WAFS and CAA on the construction of an inheritance and innovation experimental area of acupuncture and moxibustion in Qujiang.
