In 2017, the green travel ratio in downtown Beijing was 72 percent, and the traffic performance index, which measures the severity of congestions on a scale of one to 10, was a moderate 5.6, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport reported on Jan. 2.

In 2017, six districts in downtown Beijing began construction on more than 90 roads and carried out 100 reconstruction projects to relieve traffic congestion. For example, the reconstruction project of the Fenzhongsi bridge ramp relieved the congestion of the northbound section of the bridge. During the morning rush hours, traffic speed at this road section increased from 28 to 50.7 kilometers per hour, an increase of 81.1 percent; the traffic speed during evening peak hours increased from 16.6 to 40.7 kilometers per hour, an increase of 145.2 percent.

Parking management in the city also made great strides in 2017. A general survey of the motor vehicle parking resources was completed, which laid a foundation for easing congestion through parking management; Beijing launched the electronic toll collection system for parking at 4,086 parking stalls along 37 roads in the six districts of downtown Beijing and Tongzhou District; the city reorganized the parking lots along the roads inside the second ring road, and has been carrying out inspections for illegal parking every 15 minutes; it has also explored other comprehensive measures to ease congestion in residential communities.

In 2017, the city has completed construction on 10 roads with a total length of 46.2 kilometers. It also began construction on 16 projects, including the 104 and the 105 national highways. Moreover, it has also completed road maintenance projects, covering a total area of 1.35 million square meters.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region accelerated the development of its transportation integration. The construction of six key expressways in the area started in 2017, totaling 157.7 kilometers. The northern line of Beijing’s new airport expressway has also begun construction. Moreover, commuters can now use one metro card throughout the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region in the public transportation network as well as book tickets online.

The railway from downtown Beijing to its subsidiary administrative center launched in 2017, with a travel time of 48 minutes between the two areas.

Also during the year, the city reconstructed a total of 600 kilometers of bicycle lanes. Furthermore, the city underwent safety inspections on183 roads within the 3rd ring and installed 305 bollards to divide them into motor vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian sections.

Meanwhile, public transportation authorities optimized 41 bus routes and launched 16 new micro loop routes. These efforts helped to reduce redundancy and increase the availability of bus routes in the newly built communities, the emerging industrial parks and areas around subway stations. There are also more special bus routes, including 309 custom and tourist routes and shuttle buses to train stations, as well as 140 fast non-stop routes with a daily passenger capacity of over 20,000.
