Akhal-Teke horses imported from Kazakhstan reached a breeding base in Urumqi on Tuesday after about 40 days of quarantine.

The horses, a breed famed for its speed and endurance, were imported via the Jeminay border pass in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. They arrived at the Akhal-Teke horse breeding base in the regional capital after a 13-hour journey from the pass.

Workers will feed and train them according to standard procedures, according to Xinjiang Yema Group, the importer.

The base, which began importing the horses in 2009, is home to about 140 such animals.
