According to the bureau, it was the first time the Shanghai port has intercepted the species at such a high frequency in the imported wooden packages.

The wood bark beetles are a major pest and are widespread in the world, resilient and adaptable. There are many hosts for the non-native bark beetle including in the roots and broad-leaved trees and shrubs, it can also propagate on trees of various sizes and types. Once the species is introduced, it will seriously threaten agriculture and forestry in China and the safety of the ecological environment.

The bureau pledged that the Shanghai inspection and quarantine agencies will focus on wood packaging from Mexico and the United States, and increase the intensity of inspection using a range of measures.

Statistics show that in 2017, out of the 98,000 batches of entry packaging passing through quarantine inspection, 19,000 batches contained unqualified wooden packaging, or 19.5 percent. A further 1,800 cases of wooden packaging were intercepted with140 pests quarantined.
