Chinese research vessel Kexue, or "Science" literally, left from the eastern city of Qingdao Saturday on an expedition to th Magellan Seamounts in the west Pacific.

The expedition will improve understanding of the little-known seamounts, which are mountains rising from the bottom of the ocean without reaching the surface.

It is estimated that there are more than 30,000 seamounts in the oceans. Over 60 percent are in the Pacific. With rich fishing, mineral resources and a diversity of marine organism, seamounts are attractive for scientific research and commercial activities.

Located on the west Pacific, the Magellan chain consists of more than 10 large tablemounts.

With 80 people on board, the vessel is expected to return in late April.
