Construction of the Hong Kong section of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link (XRL) is nearing completion and trial operations are due to start on April 1, according to a report by Xinhua News Agency.

Funded by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, the project has been designed and constructed by MTR Corporation. MTR is the operator of the Hong Kong subway system along with subway lines in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou.

During a ceremony on Friday to mark the completion of the main construction works, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the Hong Kong government will work to ensure the smooth operation of the XRL when the line opens in September.

The 26-kilometer-long line connects Hong Kong to the 25,000 kilometer national high-speed rail network. It will help consolidate Hong Kong's place as a regional transportation hub and is expected to open up economic opportunities.

A one-stop border checkpoint is planned for the starting point of the Hong Kong section of the XRL at West Kowloon Station. The checkpoint will serve commuters traveling between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.
